The President of the University of Shatrah, Prof. Dr. Basim Abdul-Hussein Jarallah, chaired the examination committee for the master's thesis submitted by the researcher Karrar Fadhil Hassan in the Branch of Microbiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, entitled “Molecular Detection of the Main Bacterial Isolates Associated with Urinary Tract Infection in the North of Dhi Qar Governorate”, on Wednesday, 3 September 2025.
The study analysed the bacterial agents causing urinary tract infections. The results showed that females are more susceptible to infection, at a rate of 60.5%, compared with 39.5% among males, while E. coli was the most common causative agent.
The results also showed that infection rates in urban areas reached 53.49%, ahead of rural areas, which recorded 46.5%. The study indicated that the 61–70 age group is the most susceptible to infection.
The study concluded that urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent a global health challenge owing to the high rates of infection resulting from bacterial colonisation of the urinary system, noting that the study was based on the analysis of 150 samples from patients who showed symptoms of infection.
