The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, officially announced the opening of the public University of Shatrah in Dhi Qar Governorate.
In his speech during the official opening ceremony, held at the Al-Gharraf University Complex in the presence of a gathering of dignitaries and officials of the governorate, he affirmed that the need to establish and create universities is no longer a luxury or an attempt to fill gaps in some cities, but rather a strategic necessity for development, growth and qualification and for meeting the increasing demand for higher education. He referred to the formation of a high ministerial committee charged with studying the indicators of the governorates' need for new universities and setting short-, medium- and long-term plans to accommodate the increasing population growth, explaining that Dhi Qar Governorate falls within the category that requires qualitative solutions to bridge the gap between the output of preparatory (secondary) schooling and the actual capacity of the universities in it.
He added that the University of Shatrah will give the institutions of higher education and scientific research new momentum towards achieving academic objectives according to ambitious programmes and plans that are in harmony with comprehensive development aspirations.
The Minister of Education continued that the opening of the public University of Shatrah will strengthen the work paths of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which is moving with full confidence towards adopting effective educational systems so as to achieve a balance between quantity and quality in the university education equation, which must be characterised by quality, flexibility and the ability to keep pace with the movement of science and knowledge and to anticipate their future horizons.
For his part, the President of the University of Shatrah, Dr. Basim Abdul-Hussein Jarallah, expressed his thanks and gratitude to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, for his sponsorship of this file and his keenness to set out the steps leading to the official announcement of the University's opening.
The Minister of Education concluded the opening ceremony by honouring a number of figures and staff members who made a positive contribution to completing the stages of the project and achieving the required integration.
