As part of the activities of the University of Shatrah in commemoration of the Arba’een of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, Assistant Professor Dr. Adnan Rasmi Yasser, a lecturer in the College of Education for Girls at the University of Shatrah, presented a scientific paper entitled “The Arbaeen Visit from the Perspective of the Physics of Crowds,” as part of the scientific and cultural activities organized by the university during the Arbaeen visit, on Tuesday evening, July 21, 2026, in the heat wind parade.
The paper sought to approach the movement of the visitors of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and their ritual behavior as a broad collective phenomenon that can be analyzed in light of the concepts of crowd physics and the laws of movement, thus opening a field of knowledge for the intersection between the natural sciences and the human sciences in the study of major human phenomena.
The researcher explained that crowd physics represents an epistemic factor in which physics intersects with other human sciences, to generate cognitive tools capable of testing the dynamics of human groups and analyzing their patterns of interaction and movement, especially the millions of crowds heading to the holy city of Karbala.
The paper indicated that the Arba’een visit represents a broad, central model for studying the movement of human gatherings, with the possibility of benefiting from some concepts related to the movement of fluids in understanding the flow of crowds and their changing densities and paths. It also stressed the importance of crowd physics as a supportive scientific tool in enhancing security and safety, by understanding the movement of human gatherings, organizing them, and reducing the risks of crowding, suffocation, and congestion.
This activity embodies the University of Shatrah’s keenness to employ scientific knowledge in the service of society, and to enhance its scientific and cultural presence in the activities accompanying the Arbaeen visit, in line with its mission and goals of supporting scientific research and providing knowledge contributions that serve the community and visitors.
