Department of Biology at the College of Education for Girls / University of Shatrah
Holds a Scientific Awareness Seminar.
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Shatrah, Prof. Dr. Basim Abdul-Hussein Jarallah,
under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Education for Girls, Prof. Dr. Afrah Abd Maktouf,
and under the management of the Head of the Department of Biology, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Hassan Sahib,
the Department of Biology at the College of Education for Girls held a scientific seminar entitled:
(Setbacks Resulting from Radiation Leakage and Potential Biological Effects)
The seminar was delivered by:
1- Asst. Lect. Afrah Naeem Atiya
2- Asst. Lect. Sara Awad Turki
The seminar addressed important themes concerning the concept of radiation leakage and its environmental sources (air, water, soil), and its possible causes, whether resulting from major accidents such as Chernobyl and Fukushima, or from technical errors and natural disasters.
The seminar also discussed the potential biological effects (setbacks) resulting from exposure to radiation, which were divided into two main themes:
First: Somatic Effects
Early (acute) effects:
Bone marrow damage, immunodeficiency, damage to the digestive system, radiation fever, hair loss and ulcers, which may lead to death at high doses.
Late effects:
Cancers of various types (blood, thyroid, bone), infertility, and cataracts.
Second: Genetic Effects
These are transmitted through germ cells, causing genetic mutations that may appear in children and grandchildren.
The seminar witnessed extensive scientific discussions and contributions from the audience that enriched the lecture and helped strengthen understanding of the dangers of radiation and the methods of awareness and prevention.
