The Student Activities Division at the Technical Institute in Al-Shatrah, in cooperation with the College of Education for Girls – University of Shatrah, held a scientific lecture entitled:
"The Significance of Colours in Pre-Islamic Poetry and the Holy Qur'an".
The lecture was delivered by:
Asst. Prof. Dr. Kadhim Khudhair Al-Qadhi
Lect. Dr. Khalid Raheem Al-Fadhli
The event was attended by the Dean of the Technical Institute in Al-Shatrah, Prof. Dr. Muwaffaq Abdul-Aziz Al-Hasnawi, the Head of the Department of Health Administration Techniques, and the official in charge of the Student Activities Division.
The two lecturers addressed the main linguistic connotations of colours in pre-Islamic poetry and the Holy Qur'an. Among the most important points presented in the lecture:
The connotations of the colour black in the Qur'an agreed with those of pre-Islamic poetry, except for the connotation of the withering and perishing of plants.
The Holy Qur'an added new connotations to the colour white, such as the connotation of blindness and the miracle of the hand of Moses (peace be upon him).
The Qur'an did not expand on the connotations of the colour red, mentioning it only once to denote the colour of stones or of tracks in some mountains.
The connotations of the colour green remained close between the Qur'an and pre-Islamic poetry.
The Qur'an was unique in the connotation of bright yellow, namely bringing delight to the beholder.
The colour blue appears only once in the Holy Qur'an, with the connotation of fear and dread.
This lecture reflects the keenness of both sides to strengthen joint scientific activities and to offer knowledge content that enriches the linguistic and rhetorical understanding of researchers and students.
